CSAD at AJ Architecture
Awards 2023

Former and current students and staff at Canterbury School of Architecture and Design did well in this year’s AJ Architecture Awards.

Congratulations to alumna Amrit Seera at Curl la Tourelle Head Architecture, who won in the School Project category; to former M.ARCH design technology tutor Dave Lomax at Waugh Thistleton for winning both, the Workplace Project and the Architect of the Year award; and to BA Architecture Stage 3 tutor Alex Smith and UCA alumna and Stage 2 tutor Maegan Icke. Alex’s [Y/N} Studio was highly commended for their Bradbury Works in London.

“Building on an earlier rework by Hawkins\Brown, this refurbishment and extension of a Victorian building as affordable workspaces was commended by judges as intelligent retrofit on a budget. ‘Incredibly clear diagram and generous approach to reuse of the existing,’ was how one described it. With two floors added and a new polycarbonate skin transforming access decks into connective terraces, its design was judged ‘simple and smart.’ Facing onto Dalston’s Gillett Square, judges also liked how it engaged with the public realm and felt ‘incredibly grounded’ in its site. ‘It sets a key agenda as to how we need to pivot as a profession,’ said one.”
