Hazel Cowie ARB

Lecturer in Architecture



Hazel Cowie is a PhD researcher with an interest in understanding the role of representation in the commodification of housing. Her research involves various themes relating to gentrification, heritage and the role of technology in the communication and reproduction of lifestyle consumption. This research has been presented at the Society of Architectural Historians annual conference, as well as other international gatherings, and has been published in the peer-reviewed journal sITA. The PhD is based in Newcastle University and is supervised by Prof. Adam Sharr and Dr Sam Austin.

Hazel is also an architect with a background in sustainable design and residential architecture. She has experience of working across projects of all scales – from bird hides to residential towers – across the UK. At Pitman Tozer Architects she worked on social housing projects as well as houses for individuals as project architect.

She was a studio and technology tutor at Newcastle University’s School of Architecture Planning and Landscape where she co-led a third year studio and also taught across the undergraduate and masters programmes. She studied at Edinburgh University and Newcastle University.
